The Science of Tallow: Why Softening Skin Isn't the Same as a "Medical Cure"

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, or at local festivals, you’ve probably seen some wild promises about tallow. People are claiming it’s a “miracle cure” for chronic skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, claiming it completely erases skin issues overnight.

At Made 4 Me Soapery we want you to buy and love our products as much as we do. But we follow State labeling rules and will never say our Tallow products do this or that.

What we will do is educate our customers on what Tallow is, or psoriasis/eczema is and what is actually happening to your skin when you apply it.At Made 4 Me Soapery, we love tallow. We use rich, pure, grass-fed tallow in our formulations because it is one of the most deeply moisturizing ingredients available for cold process soaps and body products. But we also believe in honest craftsmanship, strict FDA compliance, and telling our customers the truth: tallow is a deeply nourishing cosmetic ingredient, not a medical drug. So, why do so many people swear that repeated use of tallow "cleared up" their psoriasis? The answer comes down to skin barrier science—specifically, the difference between curing a condition and restoring a broken barrier. What Actually Happens During a Psoriasis Flare-Up?To understand why tallow works so well on dry, scaled skin, you have to look at what psoriasis actually is. Psoriasis is an internal, immune-mediated condition. Your immune system mistakenly signals your body to produce skin cells up to ten times faster than normal.Because those skin cells accumulate faster than your body can shed them, they pile up into thick, silver-scale patches called plaques. Because the outer layer of skin (the stratum corneum) is severely disrupted, it loses water rapidly. This extreme dryness leads to micro-tears, severe itching, and painful cracking.Tallow Doesn't Exfoliate or Cure—It Softens and RestoresWhen people see thick, silver plaques disappear after using tallow regularly, they often assume the tallow "exfoliated" the dead skin away or "cured" the condition. Scientifically, that’s not what’s happening. It isn't an exfoliant: Tallow doesn't contain chemical acids (like salicylic or glycolic acid) that dissolve skin cells. It isn't a drug: Tallow cannot turn off the internal immune response driving the rapid cell production. What tallow actually does is provide bio-identical barrier support.Tallow is naturally packed with fatty acids—like oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids—that closely mirror the lipids naturally produced by human skin. When you apply these lipids to rigid, dry plaques, they act like water on hardened clay or conditioner on dry leather. The lipids soak deep into the hardened scale buildup, making those stiff, dead cells pliable and soft again. Instead of tearing or staying trapped in thick layers, the softened cells are able to gently slough off during normal, everyday washing. Why Repeated Use Makes Skin Look Completely ClearWhen you use a quality tallow product consistently on severely dry areas, a few amazing things happen to the skin barrier:Breaks the Dryness-Inflammation Cycle: Extreme dryness causes skin to crack, which triggers even more local inflammation. Continuous lipid application keeps the skin supple, stopping that cracking cycle in its tracks.Restores Normal Shedding: Keeping the outer layer soft 24/7 allows the body to shed excess cells normally instead of letting them stack into raised plaques.Traps Vital Hydration: Tallow acts as a breathable barrier seal, locking your skin’s natural moisture inside. Well-hydrated skin cells lay flat and smooth, dramatically reducing the red, raw, flaky appearance.Over time, the surface of the skin looks clear, smooth, and healthy. But the underlying immune response is still there—the skin looks clear because its physical barrier is finally getting the intense moisture and lipids it needs to function properly.Formulated with Integrity & Full ComplianceAt Made 4 Me Soapery, we follow strict federal guidelines and labeling laws. We will never make wild, unsubstantiated medical claims or promise that our products "cure" skin diseases. We don't sell medicine, and we don't play regulatory guessing games—we don’t even dual-label our tallow as food and cosmetics, because federal law keeps those categories strictly separated for your safety. We simply make honest, small-batch soaps and body products crafted with high-quality lipids that let your skin barrier do what it does best: protect, soften, and thrive. When you feed your skin real, quality ingredients, you don't need wild marketing claims—the results on your skin speak for themselves!
